I occasionally get asked “when should I start watering my lawn?”. Easy answer, 3 weeks ago. If you haven’t been watering regularly (and I mean almost every day), don’t bother starting now. There is no way you will be able to catch up.

We like to think that we’ll get an average of 1″ of rain per week from Spring to Fall. That doesn’t always happen, but that’s a good average. That means that right now we’re inches behind. If you take you lawn sprinkler and turn it on you’ll find that it takes a very long time to even get a quarter of an inch in the bottom of a glass.

If you have an automatic in-ground system my advice is this – make a decision early in the season that you’ll either run it no matter what, or that you’re not going to run it. Nothing in between makes sense.
